CJPD

Catholic Justice & Peace Department

The catholic justice and Peace Department formerly catholic justice and Peace Commission is an executive arm of the Kenya Conference of catholic bishops (KCCB), whose work is to fulfil one of the KCCB’s objectives, that is to promote justice and challenge oppressive structures in society.

Its broad aim is to sensitize individuals and communities on justice, peace issues and their respective roles and duties in addressing peace development, human advancement and human rights

Peace & Reconciliation

This program focuses on conflict prevention, resolution, and healing in communities affected by violence, ethnic tension, or social division. Guided by the teachings of Christ as the Prince of Peace, CJPD promotes dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. Activities under this pillar include community mediation, trauma healing workshops, inter-ethnic forums, and youth peace ambassador programs. Special emphasis is placed on inclusive participation—especially of women, youth, elders, and faith leaders—in rebuilding relationships and fostering long-term reconciliation.

Integrity & Creation

Rooted in the Church’s call to care for God’s creation (as emphasized in Laudato Si’ by Pope Francis), this program advocates for environmental stewardship, ethical leadership, and responsible use of resources. CJPD educates communities on sustainable agriculture, water conservation, climate change adaptation, and waste management. The department also promotes integrity in both public and private life—fighting corruption and encouraging a culture of transparency and accountability. By combining care for the environment with moral formation, this program helps communities flourish in harmony.

Justice & Human Rights

CJPD works to uphold the dignity of every person by promoting awareness and protection of basic human rights, especially for the marginalized and vulnerable. This includes civic education, legal awareness, and advocacy against injustices such as gender-based violence, land disputes, child abuse, and discrimination. The program engages both grassroots communities and policymakers, helping people understand their rights and responsibilities, while encouraging the Church’s prophetic voice in confronting systemic injustices.

Lenten Campaign Initiatives

The annual Lenten Campaign is one of CJPD’s most visible and impactful programs. It runs during the Lenten season and is designed to deepen faith through action by addressing a specific social justice theme each year. The campaign mobilizes Catholics across the country to reflect on Gospel values, participate in acts of charity, and engage in civic responsibility. Educational materials, homily guides, and parish-based discussions are provided to help the faithful connect their spiritual journey with real-world issues like peace, governance, environmental justice, or social inequality.
