The Catholic Diocese of Maralal, situated in the northern part of Kenya, was curved from Marsabit diocese, formerly Samburu, Moyale and Marsabit districts. It has a legal Status of a Church organization in Kenya and is registered with the Secretariat of the Kenya Conference of the Catholic Bishops (KCCB) in Nairobi.
The Catholic Diocese of Maralal covers, 20,809 km2 (8,034 sq mi). It was created by pope, St. John Paul II, on the 15th of June 2001. Upon his consecration to the episcopate on the 06th of October, 2001, the first ordinary of the Diocese, his Lordship Rt. Rev, Bishop Emeritus, Virgilio Pante, IMC. (15 June 2001 – 20 July 2022); took up the mantle of reconciling warring communities within Samburu County, guided by his motto: “with the ministry of reconciliation.”
The Diocese now under the new ordinary, Rt. Rev. bishop Hieronymus E. Joya, IMC. has 14 ecclesiastical Parishes facilitating spiritual and integral human development services at the grass root levels of their respective communities.
Most of these parishes are run by Diocesan priests, along with male and female missionary and religious institutes and congregations also present in the Diocese. These Parishes have been grouped into 3 deaneries, namely: Maralal deanery (Maralal, Barsaloi, Porro, Morijo, Lodokejek and Suguta); Baragoi deanery (Baragoi, Tuum, South Horr and Sererit); and Wamba deanery (Wamba, Lodungokwe, Archers Post and Sereolipi).
